Chapter 27

Washington, DC

Congressman Jordon Brooks could always be counted on by cable news networks for a sound bite. He possessed an opinion on everything and seldom used a verbal filter when commenting on the issue of the day. Congenial and well-liked by his colleagues in the House of Representatives, he represented the good citizens of the 5th District of Minnesota, which included the city of Minneapolis, with competence. Greatness, no, but if one of his constituents needed help navigating the bureaucracy of the federal government, he was your guy.

He did possess one flaw. Greed. A flaw that could one day get him in trouble.

This personality defect meant he coveted the attention of successful—translated as rich—individuals. One in particular being Hunter Holden. Jordon Brooks was owned lock, stock, and barrel by the CEO of Transnational Financial.

So, when Holden’s right-hand man, Dean Melton, called for an appointment in Brooks’ Rayburn House Office Building, the good congressman chose not to attend a critical budget hearing to meet with Holden’s assistant.

The two men shook hands inside the closed confines of Brooks’ office. “What can I do for Mr. Holden today, Dean?”

“Hunter sends his compliments for the fine job you do for the 5th District, Jordon.”

“I am pleased he’s happy.”

“Extremely.”

After a decade in Washington, Brooks knew there was more to the visit than just being complimented. He remained quiet.

“You are one of the ranking members of the Judiciary Committee, aren’t you, Jordon?”

The congressman nodded.

“And you are also the cochairman, correct?”

“Yes.”

“How hard would it be for you to get information from the FBI about a retired agent?”

“Depends. What type of information?”

“Hunter needs to know where this agent lives.”

“Uh, that’s kind of an odd request.”

“Yes, it is. But Hunter has a reason for needing to know.”

“I would need the reason, Dean.”

“Best if you don’t know.”

“I see.”

“How soon can you obtain the information?”

“What’s the name of the agent?”

“Sean Kruger.”

Brooks’ eyes widened when he heard the name. “Uh…”

“It’s important, Jordon.”

“The FBI guards their HR records very closely. It’s off-limits to someone like me. Particularly concerning this specific agent.”

Melton tilted his head. “What’s so special about him, Jordon?”

“He’s a legend within the agency, and it’s rumored he’s the main reason Ryan Clark is the director.”

“Aren’t you on the Judiciary Committee?”

“Yes.”

“So, you have oversight and the right to know the details within the bureau.”

“Only the agency, not the agents.”

Melton stood. “I’m sure a man of your stature and intelligence can figure out how to get this information without ruffling feathers. Hunter would be most appreciative if you can do this one favor for him.” He paused. “Most appreciative.”

“Is everything okay, Congressman?”

The question came from his administrative assistant, Claudine Ward. She kept her gaze on him from his office door, which she had opened slightly to check on him.

He blinked several times and realized she was speaking to him. “Yes, Claudine, everything is fine.”

“Sorry to bother you, sir. But your wife is on line one.”

“She is? Uh, thank you, tell her I’ll call her back in five minutes.”

His assistant returned to her desk, leaving the office door open.
